The small town Consuegra, near Toledo, celebrates every year in end October the Fiesta de la Rosa Azafran (Saffron festival). Three days of the weekend are dedicated to the unique spice – the Saffron. This event highlights the importance of saffron and the traditional culture of the Castile-La Mancha Region.
It aims to promote the cultural essence of Castile-La Mancha through its gastronomy, crafts, history and traditions. The event offers a highly varied programme, starting with the proclamation by Dulcinea and the Maids of Honour.
Especially outstanding during the celebrations are: the “Grinding of Peace and Love”, where a 16th-century windmill grinds wheat to make flour; the traditional La Mancha gastronomy event; the Saffron Rose harvesting competition, where participants have to separate the saffron from the flower in the least time possible; and a Folk Festival with groups from all over the Region. Saffron-producers are the main protagonists of this fiesta, which has been held sin 1963. Exhibitions, cultural activities and sporting competitions complete the programme.
