Barcelona’s Sonar International Festival of Music and Art is one of the biggest events of the summer for electronic music and digital arts fans alike. Here are just a few reasons why Sonar should be at the top of your list of things to do this season, along with a couple of helpful tips on how to get there and what you need to bring.
Sonar first kicked off in 1994, attracting some of Europe’s premier dance acts. It has continued to keep its finger on the pulse of current electronic music ever since. The festival is separated into two locations: Sonar by Day takes place in Fira Montjuic, located on the outskirts of Barcelona and showcasing new and upcoming talent, and Sonar by Night takes place in Fira Gran Via de L’Hopsitalent, with more established names.
Who does it attract?
Because of the mix of electronic music and multimedia art, Sonar primarily attracts a host of young and attractive festival goers. But with the secondary focus on digital multimedia, it has become a buzzing meeting point for various creative professionals including, artists, promoters, software developers, new media-bods and digital designers. With so many like-minded professionals in one place it makes the perfect setting for networking or even an excuse for a business trip for digital agencies or professionals.
This year’s Sonar Festival kicks off on 13 June featuring a mix of established and new acts, including acts like Pet Shop Boys, Jurassic 5, Soulwax and Skrillex. Here is the full lineup to this year’s festivities
In addition to this, the festival gives stage time to some of Europe’s top digital artists and creative designers with a stacked lineup of digital workshops and exhibitions.
There are daily flights from up and down the country going to Barcelona and back at competitive prices. Once you have arrived in the city you will easily be able to spot the hordes of festival goers dressed in flip-flops and oversized sunglasses, queuing for numerous bus links to the festival. As the festival is held in two locations, there will also be a number of direct buses from Fira Montjuïc to Fira Gran Via L’Hospitalet.
What to bring
Fortunately, Sonar falls in the middle of the Spanish summer so there will be no need for your traditional festival willies. Still, it’s best to make sure you don’t forget the true essentials. Portable phone chargers can be picked up relatively cheaply for most major phone models, and dry shampoo or shower wipes can be found in most beauty and health retailers. As far as style goes, festivals are not the place to showcase your favorite frocks – you’re better off finding a number of affordable summer outfits from places like New Look. The Boyfriend Tee is in keeping with the hip festival tone, but costs a fraction of that which you’d buy at most other designer outlets.
The festival is fast approaching, so be sure to get your ticket soon.
