WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance), a festival of music, art and dance from all around the world, is the brainchild of the British singer Peter Gabriel and aims to bring different musical rhythms to a wider public.
This year sees a new edition, to be held in Santa Catalina Park in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, with performances by more than twenty international artists. Besides the concerts, there will also be a wide variety of parallel activities, such as vocal and instrumental workshops for adults, gastronomic tasting sessions, and courses for children, along with cabaret shows, conferences and audiovisual presentations.
Together with Australia, Spain has become the most popular country outside the UK for WOMAD festivals; and since 1989 the festival has visited Caceres in Extremadura, Granada, Barcelona, Madrid, Pamplona, and Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands.
A country with an insatiable appetite for fiesta, and with a warm and welcoming climate, Spain is a natural choice for festivals.
The Canary Islands make an idyllic setting for the festival, with blue skies, sandy beaches and stunning natural scenery providing an Atlantic Ocean holiday backdrop for this hugely popular event.
