Tijarafe Fiestas del Diablo

On the night of September 8th, everybody is entertained while dancing in the verbena in Tijarafe and waiting impatiently in the La Candelaria square, next to the church, for the El Diablo (the Devil) to burst in. El Diablo arrives stealthily. Then he bursts in, blazing with fire and colour, music and much fun.

Tijarafe Fiestas del DiabloHundreds of spitting fireworks cover his body, which used to be made of tin cans and nowadays is made of black fibre. Inside the costume, a local expert dances while the music band plays music and people crowd together around him, provoking him despite of running the risk of being burnt.  Others run away. However, he is defeated: once his head is burnt, the fire will be completely extinguished and he will run away.  The Virgen has defeated the Devil again.
